Global Cybersecurity Patent Ranking: Chinese Firms Accounted for Six of the Top 10, with Huawei and Tencent Making the Top Three

Chinese firms accounted for six of the top 10 global patent holdings in the cybersecurity technology sector as of August, with two making the top three, according to a report from Nikkei Asia on Sunday. Nikkei compiled the data in cooperation with U.S. information services provider LexisNexis. The data took into account patents registered across 95 countries and regions. The report said that U.S. computer manufacturer IBM came out top with 6,363 patents, followed by Huawei and Tencent with 5,735 and 4,803 patents respectively. Among the top 10 include financial provider Ant Group with 3,922 patents, State Grid Corporation with 3,696 patents, Alibaba Group Holding with 3,122 patents and China Investment Corporation with 3,042 patents. Chinese companies have filed significantly more cybersecurity patent applications since 2018, the report said. IBM's patent holdings have increased by 1.5 times compared to 10 years ago. By contrast, Huawei and Tencent's holdings have increased by 2.3 times and 13 times, respectively.
